התכוונתי לכתוב את הפוסט הזה מזמן, ואחר כך חשבתי שהוא כבר לא רלוונטי יותר. ושוב ושוב הופתעתי לגלות אנשים שלא מכירים את הפנינה האינטרנטית "אחמד את סלים". “שוגר זאזא” הם טום טרגר ואור פז, אחראים על מופת היוטיוב המדובר. למי מכם שלא מכיר עוד את האחים אחמד וסלים, פרק א’ בסדרה מופיע בהמשך. אחמד וסלים מג’ייף הם זוג אחים, בנים ליאסר מג’ייף. אביהם רוצה בכל ליבו שילדיו יביאו כבוד גדול למשפחה ויהרגו הרבה הרבה יהודים במעשי חבלה כאלה ואחרים, בעוד אחמד וסלים עצמם רוצים בעיקר לשחק גיטר הירו ולצבור חברים בפייסבוק, כאחד האדם בן גילם. הסדרה הופיעה תחילה ביו-טיוב, ופרק מסויים אפילו צונזר והורד מיו-טיוב, בגלל היותו אלים ופרובוקטיבי במיוחד. באיחוד האמירויות נחסמה הסדרה לצפיה. היוצרים ציינו שאינם מעוניינים לעשות צחוק מהאיסלאם אלא מהטרור..
כשנתקלתי לראשונה באחמד וסלים לא הפסקתי להתגלגל מצחוק. אם הסדרה מצחיקה או לא זה עניין של טעם, אבל בעיני גם אם היא לא מצחיקה קשה שלא לכבד את העבודה שנעשית כאן.
מהתשובות של אור ותום במפגש (שהיה כל כך מזמן שזה מביך לכתוב על זה רק עכשיו) הרכבתי כאן שבבי מידע אודות הסדרה. אם לא צפיתם - ראו הוזהרתם - הרבה מהכיף של הפעם הראשונה ייפגע.
אחמד את סלים נעשה לגמרי ע”י הצמד: פיתוח תסריט, עיצוב, איור, אנימציה, פלאש, אפטר אפקטס ודיבוב (הו הדיבוב!). אחמד את סלים הם לא הפרוייקט הראשון של הצמד. פרוייקט קודם, “מינדי והקוסם” (לא לבעלי לב חלש. אני אישית ממש רציתי שיחסכו ממני במפגש את שאר הפרקים אחרי שראיתי את הפרק הראשון, אבל הם לא חסכו...) שהיא גם סדרה אינטרנטית,הוטסה מיו-טיוב סמוך למדי לעלייה שלה. הניסיון שנצבר במינדי והקוסם ניכר באחמד את סלים: התסריט והעיבוד הקולנועי מדוייקים הרבה יותר, ואותה יצירתיות מופרעת מתועלת לפיתוח רעיונות לאחים לנסות להתחמק מהמשימה המוטלת עליהם באותו פרק. היום הפקת פרק בסדרה לוקחת שבוע ימים בלבד וכוללת הכל. זה קצב מאוד גבוה לתוכן כל כך מהודק ומגניב. מעולם לא הייתה יומרה לאנימציה אלוהית, אבל ההחלטות שמתקבלות לפתרון בעיות אנימציה הן קלות לביצוע ומבריקות על המסך. כאן נציין עוד עובדה מרתקת - הם אוטודידקטים.
לצורך הפקת הסדרה הומצאה שפה חצי מאולתרת על מנת להמנע מהתנשאות על ידי עשיית סרט באנגלית (משהו שהרבה אנימטורים בישראל עושים) ועם זאת לייצר משהו שבכל מקום בעולם ניתן להבין. הג’יבריש שהומצא כולל בתוכו המון התייחסויות רלוונטיות לחיינו, שנזרקים בקצב כל כך גבוה, שלא כולם מיד מגיעים לאוזן. אותן התייחסויות נכנסים גם בבימוי הסדרה, אופן כניסת הדמויות וקולות הצחוק של הקהל “מולו הוסרטה הסדרה”. הסדרה תורגמה על ידי מעריצים לשבע שפות שונות שהוכנסו בתור כיתוביות בתחתית הסרט. נתעכב ונאמר שרעיון הכיתוביות כתרגום לסרטים זרים הן “כחול לבן” - בכל מקום אחר בעולם מדובבים סרטים.
I meant to write this post a long time ago, and then decided it is no longer relevant. After stumbling upon more and more people who are not acquainted with the Youtube greatness “Ahmed and Salim” I release this post. “Sugar Zaza” is a duo: Tom Trager and Or Paz, are responsible for the discussed web-series. For those of you unfamiliar with Ahmed and Salim, the first webisode can be found embedded in this post. Ahmed and Saklim Medjayef are a pair of siblings, sons of Yasser Medjayef. Their father wishes with all his heart that his children grow up to be heroes and kill as many Jews as they can. As far as Ahmed and Salim themselves are concerned, they would rather play Guitar Hero and gather as many facebook friends as they can, as many of their age would. The series first appeared on Youtube, and one webisode was even censured off, for being extra violent and provocative. The Emirates blocked the channel. The artists mentioned that, and said that there was never intention to make fun of Islam and Muslims, but of terror.
When I first bumped into Ahmed and Salim I rolled on the floor laughing. Whether it is funny or not is a question of personal taste, but in my opinion, even if doesn’t even make you smile, it is still hard not to respect the quality of work invested here.
I compiled the answers given by Or and Tom on their Q&A (held in Tel-Aviv cinemateque so long ago it is embarrassing) into some kind of basic info, in hope to answer questions which may rise in your mind after watching the series. If you never watched Ahmed and Salim before, be ware of spoilers.
Ahmed and Salim are pure Sugar Zaza work: story development, design, illustration, animation, flash, after effects and dubbing (ho the dubbing!). Ahmed and Salim are not Sugar Zaza first work. An older project, “Mindy and the Magician” (not for the weak of heart! I really wanted to be spared of all episodes after being exposed to one, but the duo showed me no mercy...) is also a web-series, which was kicked out of youtube quite close to its uploading. The experience gained in Mindy and the Magician is visible in Ahmed and Salim: the story and the presentation are much more accurate. The same crazy creative energy is channeled towards the two brothers, and their tendency to avoid their fathers daily mission. Production of each episode takes one week, which is very short for such refined content. There was never any presumption for great animation, yet the decisions made while solving problems are easy to produce and no less then brilliant. Here I state another interesting thing: they are self-tought.
In order to avoid the arrogance of creating an Israely creation which speaks English (which many Israly animators do), and still appeal to audience world wide, there was a special, half improvised language invented for the series. The resulting Jibberish contains many contemporary life references, which bombard the viewer with such great speed, the ears cannot process them all at once. References can be found also in the film making aspect of the series: shooting angles, characters entrance and even the laugh track which was “recorded while filming”. The series was translated into 7 different languages by fans around the world.
