A post about creativity darkness

At the beginning doubt is greater then confidence. Every negative criticism, disregard, or even the wrong pet on the head feels like the work is not worth the effort. In animation the pain is worse, since it is a greater deal of hours, days and even months of work. Deep inside I hoped I never reach this place, and with the right decisions, made in a reasonable time I would be able to produce a fine product. It even worked out for me for a longer period of time then I could expect, and lead me to think this is possible.
A few years ago I thought about going to Bezalel School Of Art, for contemporary art actually. I had a touch for it (which evaporated as my ability to analyse art thoroughly grew. it made me a very fun museum buddy but I seriously doubt I touch this again). My neighbor told me Bezalel is poisonous, and not necessarily for good reason. She told me that people create from the depth of their guts, and serve those guts on a plate week by week, exposed to criticism of the students and teachers. This criticism is mostly negative, and not really based on presence or lack of Quality in the presented work. I didn’t think I would have problem with criticism, but I was wrong, and I didn’t have to go as far as Bezalel to learn that.
About a month ago I arrived with my other half to a trendy bar in Tel Aviv, to participate (passively) in an underground art event. There was a screening of animation shorts there, most of which were done by Bezalel graduates of that year. Through indirect acquaintance I found myself in conversation with those students. They all had this aggressive look in their eyes, as if they are under attack. The group was not small, and with two exceptions only, they looked like they just finished a weird military training camp. One of the exceptions was a guy who dropped out in the third year, and I couldn’t ignore the connection. What are they doing to them in Bezalel? Last time I checked, military training took less then four years, and probably was less damaging.
There are many ways to fail: get lost in the creation, fall in love with the subject or topic so blindly, forget that this is a film and not video art or comics. You can love your characters so much you can’t hurt or humiliate them, even though it is the right thing to do. You can develop art concept which is not possible to work with, or view for over 30 seconds. You can develop everything all right, but mess up the sound, and again the question of the importance of the sound in the all-in-all creation rises. You can do perfect but be late by a week, a day or even an hour. All value of work is lost once it is not seen. Months of work fade away, and it is so hard to raise them back from the dead, because the scorn hurts so bad.
Everyone fails sometime, and the question is how to get up and continue creation? How to sit and get back to work, even though the bed seems so soft and warm and loves us unconditionally, TV is always there to amuse us, friends who are always happy to see us, and a long yoga class is good for your mind and body? How to embrace the burden of creation and convince yourself that there is a lot of good which can come out?
Most artists manage their own time. Often their artistic work is not their income at all, which makes it even harder: there is always the excuse of “I have to make a living now”. You can hide from your creativity as much as you want, but there will be a moment it will crawl under your skin and tickle you in the back of your head, It won’t be pleasant, but more like a pound on the door, hard bangs echoing in your head, a voice calling “get up and live the life you want!”

Chris Landreth - The Spine -2009

Much was said about Landreth's previous film "Ryan". It is a documentary animation short telling the story of the animation artist Ryan Larkin. To tell you the truth, I don't like "Ryan". There, I said it about an Oscar winning animation short. In my opinion it is way too long and is indulging itself with technical abilities all over the place, not necessarily where it should.
The Spine has a fictional narrative, and an accurate and effective one at that. There is no wonder to that: the story development took a year, while the production of the film took another year. For anyone who wonders, animation is very hard work, which takes a lot of time and attention, but so is cinema, film-making in general. A well developed story, along with good cinematic understanding of it, constructs the film at least as much as the actual production.
This animation short revolves around a couple in their fifties, struggling with their marital problems in a co-dependent, self destructing relationship. The characters are developed so their mental state, and their state in the relationship, is shown on their appearance. This idea is both strange and sense-making in the same time, and was used before in the animation world. What makes it stand out here is the super-realistic (and ordinary) world the action takes place, as the story the film conveys. The peak of the story is a turn in Dan's life, as a result of which he "grows a spine". He really grows a spine, literally. This moment is charming and very well finished (technically), receives the appropriate screen-time, and is touched with an excellent camera movement (which is possible only in 3D to begin with). The video below shows some character sketches and different stages of the animation process, along with this beautiful moment.
The "making of"s can be found on the official NBF site. One day NBF will supply us with the full length film (about 10 minutes) on the website.
