רבות נאמר על סרטו הקודם של לנדרת', ריאן. הסרט הוא דוקומנטרי המספר את סיפור חייו של האנימטור ריאן לארקין. אם לאמר את האמת, לא אהבתי את הסרט "ריאן". זהו, אמרתי את זה על סרט זוכה אוסקר. בעיניי הוא נורא ארוך ומאוד חוגג על היכולות הטכניות ולא תמיד לצורך.
The Spine הוא סרט עלילתי, קצר ומהודק הרבה יותר. אין מה להתפלא: העבודה על הסיפור, הדמויות וההכנה הקולנועית של הסרט ארכה כשנה, כאשר הביצוע לקח כשנה נוספת. למי שתוהה, אנימציה זאת עבודה מאוד קשה וארוכה, שדורשת המון זמן ותשומת לב, אבל גם קולנוע. פיתוח סיפור טוב, וההבנה איך להעביר אותו קולנועית, בונה את הסרט לפחות כמו הביצוע המעשי.
במרכז הסרט עומד זוג נשוי בשנות החמישים לחייהם, שמנסה לטפל בקשר תלותי מלא הרס עצמי והדדי. הדמויות פותחו כך שמצבן הרגשי כמו גם מצבם במערכת היחסים ניכר באופן העיצוב שלהן, ומשתנה עם תהפוכות נפשן. רעיון זה מוזר והגיוני בו זמנית, וכבר נעשה שימוש בו בעולם האנימציה. מה שמדגיש אותו עוד יותר הוא העובדה שהעולם סביבו בנוי בתלת מימד מאוד ראליסטי, כמו גם הסיפור שהסרט מספר. רגע השיא של הסיפור הוא נקודת מפנה בחיי דן, בה הוא "מגדל עמוד שדרה". הוא באמת מגדל עמוד שדרה, ממש פשוטו כמשמעו. הרגע הזה מקסים ומושקע מאוד מבחינה טכנית, מקבל את זמן המסך הראוי לו, מלווה בתנועת מצלמה שמגבירה את תחושת ההתעלות (דבר שאפשרי רק בתלת מימד מלכתחילה). הסרטון למטה מראה רישומי דמויות ושלבי עבודה שונים על הסרט, ומראה גם את הרגע היפה הזה.

Much was said about Landreth's previous film "Ryan". It is a documentary animation short telling the story of the animation artist Ryan Larkin. To tell you the truth, I don't like "Ryan". There, I said it about an Oscar winning animation short. In my opinion it is way too long and is indulging itself with technical abilities all over the place, not necessarily where it should.
The Spine has a fictional narrative, and an accurate and effective one at that. There is no wonder to that: the story development took a year, while the production of the film took another year. For anyone who wonders, animation is very hard work, which takes a lot of time and attention, but so is cinema, film-making in general. A well developed story, along with good cinematic understanding of it, constructs the film at least as much as the actual production.
This animation short revolves around a couple in their fifties, struggling with their marital problems in a co-dependent, self destructing relationship. The characters are developed so their mental state, and their state in the relationship, is shown on their appearance. This idea is both strange and sense-making in the same time, and was used before in the animation world. What makes it stand out here is the super-realistic (and ordinary) world the action takes place, as the story the film conveys. The peak of the story is a turn in Dan's life, as a result of which he "grows a spine". He really grows a spine, literally. This moment is charming and very well finished (technically), receives the appropriate screen-time, and is touched with an excellent camera movement (which is possible only in 3D to begin with).
